If you have decided to purchase a zero-turn mower, you can feel confident you are making the right choice. After all, these are the most powerful and precise mowers on the market. But with so many models out there, how do you choose the right zero-turn mower for your lawn care needs? This guide from Lark Lawn & Garden can help you narrow down the options.

Deck Size

The width of the cutting deck determines how much area the mower can trim in a single pass, so the size and shape of your property are going to be the main factors in this decision. The cutting deck should be wide enough to maximize efficiency, but not so wide that you have difficulty maneuvering in the space.

These general guidelines can help you choose the right deck size for your property:

  • For lawns up to one acre, choose a 42” cutting deck.
  • For lawns up to two acres, choose a 42” to 50” cutting deck.
  • For lawns up to three acres, choose a 46” to 50” cutting deck.
  • For large commercial properties, choose a cutting deck that is 50” or wider.

Steering Options

You will have four different options when it comes to steering controls, and this mostly comes down to personal preference. The most popular steering system is the lap bar, because it allows the operator to take full advantage of the mower’s turning radius. The lap bar system consists of two levers, positioned at the lap level, that control the left and right wheels independently.

Another option is a steering wheel. The lap bar system can take some getting used to, while a steering wheel provides a familiar experience. The other options include a joystick control, and stand-up controls that allow the mower to be operated in a standing position. If you get sore from sitting for long periods, you might prefer stand-up controls.

Power Level

Last but not least, how much engine power do you need? This will primarily depend on the kind of terrain you’re up against. When mowing on steep inclines or bumpy terrain, you will need more engine power than you would on level ground. The type of grass on your property should also factor into this decision, as thicker grass will require a more powerful mower.
