Chainsaw Safety Tips

Whether you are new to operating a chainsaw or just need a refresher course, you came to the right place! This guide from Lark Lawn & Garden covers all the basics of chainsaw safety. If you are still in the market for a chainsaw, come check out our selection! You can find us in Traverse City and Cadillac, MI.

Wear the Right Gear

The first and most important step in chainsaw safety is to wear all the necessary personal protective equipment. This includes a sturdy pair of work gloves, long sleeves and pants, durable boots, and eye protection. You should also wear headphones or earplugs to prevent hearing damage.

Use Proper Technique

Always read the user manual before operating a chainsaw and follow all the instructions. Even if you have operated a chainsaw before, remember that each saw is different, so you will need to learn the specifics of your chainsaw model.

Before starting up the chainsaw, practice holding it and making cuts in the air. This will help you get a feel for how the saw moves and how to control it. When cutting, always keep the blade of the saw pointed away from you, and maintain a consistent speed.

Avoid Kickback!

Kickback occurs when the blade of your chainsaw hits an obstacle, such as a dense section of wood. This can cause the blade to suddenly "kick back" toward you. Obviously, this is something to be avoided!

To reduce the risk of kickback, make sure to maintain a firm grip on the saw with both hands. Keep the blade sharp, and never try to cut through materials that are too dense. If you encounter an unexpected amount of resistance while cutting, stop and evaluate the situation. You might need to use a different technique or a different saw to complete the cut.
